The 2023 Mitten Tree will soon make its appearance in our foyer.  You are invited to drop off your contributions at any time so that early in December they can be distributed to the agencies who will ensure they are given to those in need.  Hats, Mittens, Toques, Scarves, Socks and Gloves are all accepted.

Gifts for Others:    Along with the Mitten Tree, the UCW invites you to consider the following:

  • Riverview Enhanced Living (formerly LaHave Manor) has been a long-standing recipient of gifts from our congregation.  Items which have been enjoyed by the residents include art & craft supplies, colouring books, treats, activity books, personal care items /toiletries, markers

Coins For The Cause:  A UCW Friendship Unit Project - Do you keep your spare change in a bottle?  Is it sitting around in a little dish?  Your spare change (or even a monetary donation) can make a difference.  The UCW invites you to join them in “Coins for a Cause” with donations being designated for the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore.  You can offer your gift directly to the UCW or through your offering envelope under “OTHER – Coins for the Cause”.  Contributions will be added to your year-end tax receipt.

Christmas Luncheon:

The Friendship Unit United Church Women invites women of the congregation to join them for a Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, December 7th. We will gather at Osprey's Nest in Petite Riviere at 12 noon.  No reservations are needed.  Call Barbara Rafuse at 693-2046 if you'd like to carpool.

Kettle Bell Volunteers:

Scent Sensitive:

You may notice that our Worship Candles at the front have inserted Tea Lights instead of using the “real candle”.  The main reason for this is that the tea lights are unscented and therefore attentive to those who are sensitive to fragrances, perfumes and scents.  We all are asked to do our part to limit the amount of scents and perfumes we wear during our times of worship and gatherings.

Anniversary Sunday – Sept 24th

Following our Service of Worship we will have a time of coffee, cookies and conversation in the church hall.  Not everyone needs to bring something to share on the Table of Community.  If you are able to bring a contribution put your name down on the list found in the Foyer.  There will be other times during the coming months for others to offer to bring a contribution to our Table of Community.

Blessings of the Animals Service

Sept 24th at 1:00 PM outside on the lawn by the Hall Windows.  Anyone is invited to bring their beloved pets if they are well-behaved around other pets and we request they be on leashes or in pet-carriers/cages.   Those attending can also bring a picture if that is safer.  ALSO we will include a Time of Remembrance for pets who have died (not just recent deaths).  This is something we have never done before but we are going to try and see how it all transpires.  Even if you do not have a pet you are invited to attend and participate.

If your group/committee has information or announcements to be shared with our Community of Faith please have them
submitted to Charlotte Brooks (phone: 902 688 2978 or by email: cbrooks17@eastlink.ca) by Wednesday evenings for

A Message of Thanks:

On March 31st the Pentz Elementary School Home & School Association hosted a dinner for the students at West Side United.  We received the following message from Paula Baker (Principal of Pentz Elementary).  They hosted another dinner in December.  We do not charge for the use of our space for the School – it is part of our support for our community and neighbour.

We are so lucky to have such fine folks right next door! It is a lovely relationship- we are noisy all week and quiet on the weekend…and you are busy on the weekend. But even better is the neighbor that invites you in- to use their facility…when they are not even present. That’s trust and friendship at its finest.  The lessons we are learning is more than a school can teach!  You are so kind. We are so grateful!         Paula Baker – Principal PES

Directions

  • Follow Highway 331 through LaHave, Dublin Shore, West LaHave and turn left to take the highway on the backside of Crescent Beach to the LaHave Islands.

Tidbits
Little Bits of News and
Information

from West Side United Church

– Pentz
January 2023

It has been a long while since we sent out a sort of newsletter to our community. Our Website and Facebook
Page are active with current events, news and weekly announcements and updated regularly. We thought for a
change we would put several bits and pieces of news and updates into one page and share with our community
– especially for those who may not have internet access.

-Student Minister - Donna Kelly

We have been thrilled to have Donna Kelly with us as a Student Minister since September 2021. Donna is from Lunenburg and has been involved with the congregation of First South United Church. She began her studies with the Atlantic School ofTheology (AST) while still working with the RCMP. One of the course requirements for AST is that every student is placed within a congregation to gain experience about ministry and the role of a minister. Learning goals and objectives are prepared and along with a Supervisor and a Lay Supervision Team (LST). The day-to-day activities of a minister with a congregation are experienced. Donna is with us for 8 hours per week in a volunteer position. She leads worship, she attends meetings, visits, spends time with her Supervisor and the members of the LST. Donna is with us during the academic year (September to April) and then moves into courses at AST in the summer months with other students from across the country. Her course of study will take 5 years to complete at the end she will become an Ordained Minister with the United Church of Canada. We are thrilled to be part of this exciting journey with Donna.

Shared Ministry With Bridgewater United

Since 2021 we have been engaged in ministry with Bridgewater United Church in a Shared Ministry or in “church language”
a Collaborative Ministry. This arose when West Side United was being challenged with finances and explored ways on how
to maintain a full-time ministry position. At the same time Bridgewater United was seeking ways to support the ministry
they offer to their congregation and community. The result was to have the ministry time of Rev. Neil split between the
two congregations with 80% of his time dedicated to West Side United and 20% of his time dedicated to Bridgewater United with a primary focus on Pastoral Care.

In the spring of 2022 there was a shift and enhancement of this arrangement when Rev. Jeff Chant (the full-time minister
of Bridgewater United) moved into a new administrative position with Hospice Halifax. The result of this shift saw the
evolution of an modified sharing of Rev. Neil’s ministry to both congregations. Currently Rev. Neil’s time to both
congregations is set at a 50/50 split with 20 hours per week dedicated to both faith communities. It is our plan to move
Donna’s ministry position into a “paid position” this year of 20 hours/week or a 50% ministry appointment.
Worship continues each week at West Side United (10:30 AM) except on the 1 st Sunday of each month when both
congregations worship together along with other congregations who are part of the BUD Ministry Network (those
congregations who are part of the Be United Digital Ministry Network). The other weeks of the month worship is offered
at West Side United with Rev. Neil (2 nd and 4 th Sundays), Donna Kelly (3 rd Sunday) or Lay Members offering worship
leadership at the 10:30 AM service. On the 3 rd Sunday Rev. Neil is leading worship at Bridgewater United.
This arrangement is currently working well for our congregations. We are working on developing a closer relationship with
each other. Together we are joining for Study Groups and looking at more ways we can share ministry, events, worship,
study, and outreach opportunities. We have always had a connection with Bridgewater United but it has become more
intentional and formalized. Together we are stronger and we continue to draw closer together.

Grocery Card Program

Do you buy groceries? Of course you do, all of us do! We have been partnered with Trinity United Church in Mahone Bay for several years to offer the opportunity to purchase Grocery Cards. From the sales of these cards we get a rebate of 5% of purchases. If you purchase a $100 card you get the full value of the card and we get $5 as a rebate. In 2022 we received over $1900.00 in rebates from the cards which were purchased from those purchased from our congregation. The Grocery Cards come in denominations of $50, $100 and
$200 which can be used at Sobeys (which includes Lawton’s & Needs) and from Superstore (which can be used at No Frills and Shopper’s as well). Opportunities to purchase cards are in February, April, June,
September and November. Our next deadline to order is February 19 th and order forms
are available in the foyer at the church or we can send one to you electronically.

West Side Janitor

At the end of 2021, after many years of faithful service to our congregation, our long-serving Janitor Yvette Wamboldt made the decision it was time to leave her position. Many never had the opportunity to see Yvette at work because it often happened when none of us were around – but we always say the results of her dedication. We thank Yvette for her years of dedication and service to
our congregation – Thank You!

In February of 2022 we welcomed Suzanne Jermey into the position of Janitor for our church building. Suzanne brings several years of experience into this position and is currently also the janitor for Bridgewater United. Like Yvette, Suzanne is often around when none of us are here but if you see a little grey car in the parking lot some day during the week that is likely who is there. She is doing a great job and our building always looks great.

Welcome Suzanne, you are doing a great job!

The Fundraising Committee will be meeting soon to plan for events to be held in 2023. We are always eager and joyful to have individuals from our community volunteer to help out at our events. You do not need to be a member of our congregation to

           Lend a helping hand.

We value our “Friends of West Side” who join us in hosting our events. Feel free to let us know if you would like to be a “Friend
of West Side” – new friends are always welcome.

Holding others in our hearts and prayers

We hold in our hearts those from our community are on a journey of loss and grief.  We hold the families of Wilfred Hirtle (LaHave Islands) and Ellen Balser (Riverview Enhanced Living) and their circles of friends and communities. We extend our sympathies to Robert Haughn and Family on the recent death of his sister Marion LeBlanc. We send our sympathies to Malcolm Veinot on the recent death of his mother Gladys who was 101 in May 2022 (A funeral service will be held at a later date).  Gladys often attended our Dinner Theatres and we would celebrate her birthday.  Gladys was also a former member of LaHave United Church and a Charter Member of the UCW within our Congregation.  We send our sympathies to the family of Wendy Fraser and the congregation of Bridgewater United where she served as Organist for many years prior to her retirement in 2021.

Welcome Donna.  We are delighted to have Donna Kelly among us again this year as a Student Minister during her time of studies at the Atlantic School of Theology.  This is currently as volunteer position but as we continue to develop our relationship with Bridgewater United we are hopeful this will move into a paid position.  Welcome Donna!

Our Shared Ministry with Bridgewater United.  We continue to work on strengthening our shared ministry with Bridgewater United as we move from the 80/20 split of Rev. Neil’s time each week to a 50/50 split … where 20 hours per week will be dedicated to both congregations (West Side United and Bridgewater United).  We continue to communicate with Regional Council 15 representatives and move forward with our Shared/Collaborative Ministry.

Upcoming Meetings/Gatherings:

Official Board – Wednesday October 19th at 7 pm

Please note the change of date.

We extend our sympathies to Gwen & Grant Wile on the unexpected death her daughter Tracy this past week and to the family of Barbara Haughn of Bridgewater/Mahone Bay whose graveside funeral will be held this week in West Dublin.

Roast Beef Supper Postponed.  Due to a variety of factors the decision was made to postpone the Roast Beef Supper (which was to be held on October 16th) until earlier in the new year of 2023.

Anniversary Sunday – October 30th. Worship on Sept 25th was cancelled because of Hurricane Fiona so we have rescheduled our Anniversary Service to Oct 30th.  We will observe the 37th Anniversary of West Side United and we will also recognize the 60th Anniversary of the UCW (United Church Women) within our worship.

After Worship on October 30th we begin to adjust to the new normal of our lives (slowly) we invite you to join us for worship on Sept 25th and after worship we will have “Coffee, Cookies & Ice Cream”.  We will supply the Coffee (Tea/Juice/Water) and the Ice Cream (there may even be special toppings to decorate your ice cream).  We request you to supply the cookies … bring a plate of your favourite cookies to share with others.  Our hall offers space to spread out and enjoy and if it is a nice day we can expand out into the lawn area.

A Memorial Carol Service will be hosted at West Side United (7 PM) on December 4th.  A letter of invitation will be prepared and distributed to our community with a selection of carols we will be singing which individuals/families can choose from as a Memorial or a gift to honour someone.  Donations received from this Memorial Service will be supportive of our church and our ministry.

Grocery Card Orders – Thank you to all who continue to participate in the purchase of grocery cards.  In the most recent round we received a sales rebate of $350.00.  The next round of orders are due on November 13th and the denominations have been expanded to $10 & $25 from Superstores/Loblaws and $25 cards from Sobeys.  This expansion is to give people the option of smaller cards in case they wish to give them away to others as gifts during the upcoming Christmas/Holiday season.  Order forms for the next round can be found in the foyer.

40 Days of Anti-Racism is a program offered through our national church to assist individuals and congregations to examine the ways in which racism exists in our denomination and communities.  If you wish to be part of this educational/learning time you can go to the national church website and sign-up for the daily newsletter, watch videos prepared and even be offered the opportunity to be part of and online conversation group.
