Tidbits
Little Bits of News and
Information

from West Side United Church

– Pentz
January 2023

It has been a long while since we sent out a sort of newsletter to our community. Our Website and Facebook
Page are active with current events, news and weekly announcements and updated regularly. We thought for a
change we would put several bits and pieces of news and updates into one page and share with our community
– especially for those who may not have internet access.

-Student Minister - Donna Kelly

We have been thrilled to have Donna Kelly with us as a Student Minister since September 2021. Donna is from Lunenburg and has been involved with the congregation of First South United Church. She began her studies with the Atlantic School ofTheology (AST) while still working with the RCMP. One of the course requirements for AST is that every student is placed within a congregation to gain experience about ministry and the role of a minister. Learning goals and objectives are prepared and along with a Supervisor and a Lay Supervision Team (LST). The day-to-day activities of a minister with a congregation are experienced. Donna is with us for 8 hours per week in a volunteer position. She leads worship, she attends meetings, visits, spends time with her Supervisor and the members of the LST. Donna is with us during the academic year (September to April) and then moves into courses at AST in the summer months with other students from across the country. Her course of study will take 5 years to complete at the end she will become an Ordained Minister with the United Church of Canada. We are thrilled to be part of this exciting journey with Donna.

Shared Ministry With Bridgewater United

Since 2021 we have been engaged in ministry with Bridgewater United Church in a Shared Ministry or in “church language”
a Collaborative Ministry. This arose when West Side United was being challenged with finances and explored ways on how
to maintain a full-time ministry position. At the same time Bridgewater United was seeking ways to support the ministry
they offer to their congregation and community. The result was to have the ministry time of Rev. Neil split between the
two congregations with 80% of his time dedicated to West Side United and 20% of his time dedicated to Bridgewater United with a primary focus on Pastoral Care.

In the spring of 2022 there was a shift and enhancement of this arrangement when Rev. Jeff Chant (the full-time minister
of Bridgewater United) moved into a new administrative position with Hospice Halifax. The result of this shift saw the
evolution of an modified sharing of Rev. Neil’s ministry to both congregations. Currently Rev. Neil’s time to both
congregations is set at a 50/50 split with 20 hours per week dedicated to both faith communities. It is our plan to move
Donna’s ministry position into a “paid position” this year of 20 hours/week or a 50% ministry appointment.
Worship continues each week at West Side United (10:30 AM) except on the 1 st Sunday of each month when both
congregations worship together along with other congregations who are part of the BUD Ministry Network (those
congregations who are part of the Be United Digital Ministry Network). The other weeks of the month worship is offered
at West Side United with Rev. Neil (2 nd and 4 th Sundays), Donna Kelly (3 rd Sunday) or Lay Members offering worship
leadership at the 10:30 AM service. On the 3 rd Sunday Rev. Neil is leading worship at Bridgewater United.
This arrangement is currently working well for our congregations. We are working on developing a closer relationship with
each other. Together we are joining for Study Groups and looking at more ways we can share ministry, events, worship,
study, and outreach opportunities. We have always had a connection with Bridgewater United but it has become more
intentional and formalized. Together we are stronger and we continue to draw closer together.

Grocery Card Program

Do you buy groceries? Of course you do, all of us do! We have been partnered with Trinity United Church in Mahone Bay for several years to offer the opportunity to purchase Grocery Cards. From the sales of these cards we get a rebate of 5% of purchases. If you purchase a $100 card you get the full value of the card and we get $5 as a rebate. In 2022 we received over $1900.00 in rebates from the cards which were purchased from those purchased from our congregation. The Grocery Cards come in denominations of $50, $100 and
$200 which can be used at Sobeys (which includes Lawton’s & Needs) and from Superstore (which can be used at No Frills and Shopper’s as well). Opportunities to purchase cards are in February, April, June,
September and November. Our next deadline to order is February 19 th and order forms
are available in the foyer at the church or we can send one to you electronically.

West Side Janitor

At the end of 2021, after many years of faithful service to our congregation, our long-serving Janitor Yvette Wamboldt made the decision it was time to leave her position. Many never had the opportunity to see Yvette at work because it often happened when none of us were around – but we always say the results of her dedication. We thank Yvette for her years of dedication and service to
our congregation – Thank You!

In February of 2022 we welcomed Suzanne Jermey into the position of Janitor for our church building. Suzanne brings several years of experience into this position and is currently also the janitor for Bridgewater United. Like Yvette, Suzanne is often around when none of us are here but if you see a little grey car in the parking lot some day during the week that is likely who is there. She is doing a great job and our building always looks great.

Welcome Suzanne, you are doing a great job!

Fundraising Events for 2023

The Fundraising Committee will be meeting soon to plan for events to be held in 2023. We are always eager and joyful to have individuals from our community volunteer to help out at our events. You do not need to be a member of our congregation to

           Lend a helping hand.

We value our “Friends of West Side” who join us in hosting our events. Feel free to let us know if you would like to be a “Friend
of West Side” – new friends are always welcome.

New and Improved Road-Side Sign

Have you noticed the renovations and improvements to our road-side sign at West Side United? After many years of rain, sunshine, snow and hurricanes our sign was in need of some attention. Announcements - February 20, 2022

1.  A reminder that Sunday, February 20th is our Annual Meeting Sunday.  We begin with worship at 10:30 AM and move into our Annual Meeting.  We do require a quorum of 20 members present for the meeting.  Proof of Double/Full Vaccination and wearing of masks is required for all "in sanctuary" services of worship and meetings/groups at West Side United.

Will you be attending Feb 20th?  Please respond with YES or NO

If you have already indicated YES to your attendance ... THANK YOU!

2.  Annual Reports were available for pick-up at worship last Sunday.  We had some placed in the outside mailbox but were removed during the snow and rain of this past week.  I will be placing a few copies there later this morning if you wish to drop by and pick up a copy.

3.  Income Tax Receipts for donations made in 2021 were also available for pick-up last Sunday.  They can be found in the foyer.  Following the Annual Meeting any remaining envelopes will be sent out by Canada Post.

4.  We extend our sympathies and support to the families of Marlene Seaboyer and Mona Corkum who died this past week.  Their obituaries can be found on the website of Sweeny's Funeral Home in Bridgewater.  A Service of Marlene will happen later in the summer.  A graveside service for Mona is planned for Saturday Feb 26th (information can be found within the published obituary).

Marlene and Mona have been long-time dedicated members of the congregation of West Side United and in the congregations before West Side.  They were both Charter Members of this newly formed congregation in 1985 and offered their gifts of time and talents in many capacities, committees, events, and groups particularly their life-long membership within the UCW (United Church Women).  While we grieve their deaths we give thanks to God for the blessings of their lives and their faith and surround their families and circles of friends with our love and support in this time of loss.

5.  Grocery Card Orders and Payments are due on February 20th.  This round of placing orders has a deadline of Sunday February 20th.  Order forms can be found in the foyer and your orders can be given to Philip Himmelman.

6.  We welcome into our midst Suzanne Jermey as our Custodian.  Suzanne began her time with us on February 1st and spends a few hours a week keeping our building looking good.  She has worked for a couple of years as the custodian of Bridgewater United Church.  We welcome Suzanne.

7.  Our Lenten Study Group will be using the United Church produced resource called "Lesser Evils" which is a daily reflection book.  We have several who have already signed up to obtain a copy ($10 donation).  If you would like one for your own personal time of reflection or for your participation in the Study Groups let me know.

The Lenten Study Groups will happen in two ways.  There will be a face-to-face Study Group offered on Tuesday evenings starting on March 8th at 7 PM at West Side United.  The next Tuesday evening (March 15th) the study group will be hosted at Bridgewater United and then we will be alternating locations thereafter.  We are coming together as a larger group to share in this Lenten Study time.  On Thursday evenings (starting March 10th) we are offering a Study Group by ZOOM.  If you wish to be part of the ZOOM study group let us know so that we can share with you the information you need to obtain the link for participation.

8.  Worship on Feb 27th at West Side United.  Donna Kelly (our Student Minister) will be leading worship on this day.  We hope you will come out to support her as she continues to share her gifts with us.  Please send us an email message if you plan to attend or indicate on the sheet found in the foyer.

9.  Current capacity of worship changed slightly with the beginning of the Phase #1 of the re-opening plan within the Province of Nova Scotia.  Although we are permitted to be at 50% of our capacity we are still restricted with the total number allowed due to the requirement of social distancing.  Our current "in sanctuary" capacity is about 30.  We require proof of double/full vaccination for all attending "in sanctuary" services of worship and meetings.  Listening to the service from your vehicle through the FM Transmitter (FM 99.9) or by watching our Video Services of Worship on our Facebook Page and Website (a shared production with Bridgewater United) are options to join us for worship each week.

10.  Worship on March 6th ... we continue to work on strengthening our relationship with Bridgewater United.  We are trying something different by coming together for ONE service on the FIRST Sunday of each month.  This is a shared service of West Side United, Bridgewater United and New West Pine United.  We will come together in one place which for the present time will be Bridgewater United (because they have the larger space in the midst of the current restrictions to host a larger group - it is our hope that in the future it can be hosted at West Side United too).

Worship on March 6th at Bridgewater United requires pre-registration BY THURSDAY March 3rd ... call the Office at Bridgewater United - 902-543-4833 to reserve your spot/spots.
